Restoring a partial cPanel backup safely

cpanel-whm, backups

Use a partial restore when you need to replace a specific account component with an earlier copy. Restoring is a write operation: newer files, database records or configuration can be overwritten by the selected backup.

Prepare for the change

Take a fresh backup of the current state first. Confirm the archive belongs to this account and choose the smallest required restore scope. For a store or membership site, plan how to preserve transactions created after the old backup; restoration does not merge them automatically.

01 Restore a partial cPanel backup safely

  1. Open Backup Wizard > Restore. Select the component you intend to recover, such as Home Directory, Databases, or Email Forwarders and Filters.
  2. Choose the matching partial backup file from your computer. Read the filename and date again before uploading, especially when several sites use similar names.
  3. Start the upload and leave the operation time to complete. Do not launch another restore to the same component while the first job is running.
  4. After success, verify file permissions and application configuration as appropriate. If restoring a database, check that the application still uses the correct database name and user.
  5. Test the recovered site or email configuration before reopening public writes or removing maintenance mode.

Check the backup or recovered data

Check a representative page, login, form and database-backed action. Confirm the recovered data’s age so an older successful-looking page is not mistaken for the current state.

What should I do if the partial restore fails or contains unexpected data?

If the archive is a full-account backup, use the provider’s full restore process instead. If a partial restore fails or produces unexpected data, stop further changes, keep both old and current backups, and send support the component, backup date and exact error.
