THREE LEVELS OF VALIDATION

Find the assurance
your website needs.

All three enable encrypted connections. The difference is how much the certificate authority verifies about the identity behind your website.

DV

Start with domain control.

DV verifies that you control your domain. A straightforward route to an encrypted website connection.

Explore ↗
OV

Put your organization on record.

OV adds checks on your legal organization, with verified business details in the certificate.

Explore ↗
EV

Go deeper on business identity.

EV applies a more extensive organization verification process for a higher level of identity assurance.

Cover a family of subdomains.

Wildcard certificates cover matching subdomains under the wildcard name. Choose the coverage that fits your domain structure.

Multi-Year SSL Certificates

Multi-year certificates allow you to pay a single discounted price for two or three years of SSL certificate coverage. When you purchase a multi-year SSL certificate, you lock in a single price for up to 3 years of coverage.

Initially, you will receive a certificate that is valid for the Certificate Authority Browser Forum's maximum allowed term (1 year and 1 month) with the right to unlimited certificate reissues during the order period.

Automated reissuance will occur automatically throughout the term to ensure continued protection for your website.

For example, a 2-year SSL certificate order works as follows:

SSL certificates must be revalidated periodically. The maximum certificate lifetime is 13 months, requiring revalidation annually.

Benefits

  • Enjoy increasing discounts for each year of coverage that you purchase.
  • Remove the hassle of annual billing.
  • Annual validation. Yearly validation of identity in shorter validity certificates prevents potential fraud and spoofing.
THE VALUE OF A SECURE CONNECTION

A small signal.
A fundamental safeguard.

From the first page to the form that matters, your visitors exchange information with your website. TLS helps keep that conversation private as it travels across the network.

  • Encrypt information in transit between the browser and server.
  • Authenticate the hostname with a certificate issued by a trusted authority.
  • Build HTTPS into the pages your customers use every day.
MAKE TWO GOOD DECISIONS

The right identity.
The right coverage.

Choose validation for who you are, then choose coverage for the names your website uses. Those are separate decisions, and both deserve a clear answer.

01

How much identity?

DV checks domain control. OV adds organization identity. EV extends the business verification process. Choose the assurance your service and its audience need.

02

Which web addresses?

List the exact hostnames you want to protect. A single-domain certificate, wildcard coverage and multi-domain coverage solve different naming needs.

03

How will it be managed?

Identify the server or service where the certificate will be installed, who controls validation and who will handle future replacements. A clear owner keeps the process moving.

CONFIDENCE THAT CONTINUES

A strong start.
A considered lifecycle.

Issuance is the beginning. Keep track of certificate expiry, installation and the validation required for the next certificate. A longer subscription can include more than one certificate over its term.

  • Install the certificate with its required intermediate chain.
  • Replace the active certificate before it expires.
  • Keep validation contacts and domain access current.
BUILT AROUND YOUR WEBSITE

A certificate that fits
the way you work.

Start with what your website needs to do. Then choose the right certificate from the live collection above.

01

For a first website

A portfolio, personal site or information page can start with domain control validation and the hostnames it actually uses.

02

For an established organization

Bring verified legal identity into your certificate with OV, or choose EV when your organization requires more extensive verification.

03

For connected services

Map your shop, portal and other subdomains before choosing wildcard or additional name coverage. Keep the scope clear from the start.

ANSWERS, WITHOUT THE GUESSWORK

A little clarity.
A lot more confidence.

Understand validation, coverage and what happens after you choose your certificate.

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL Certificates enable data encryption on the internet and allow data to be transmitted securely from a web server to a browser. With SSL, your website can use the https protocol and will display a padlock in end users web browsers to indicate the connection is secure.

Why do I need an SSL Certificate?

SSL Certificates are an essential part of the internet. They not only encrypt communication between your computer and the server where a website is located, but they also provide verification that a site is what it claims to be.

What are the different types of SSL?

There are 3 different levels of vetting that SSL Certificates are based upon. Domain Validated (DV) , Organization Validated (OV), and Extended Validation (EV). The major difference between the types of certificate relates to the information the Certificate Authority, RapidSSL, GeoTrust and DigiCert, requires and validates in order to issue a certificate. The higher levels of certificate require more information, and often is displayed in the browser bar. EV SSL for example turns the browser bar green and displays the organization name to visitors to generate more trust.

What is a Wildcard SSL Certificate

A Wildcard SSL certificate provides the same encryption and authentication features as other SSL certificates but can also be applied to an unlimited number of subdomains of a website. A Wildcard SSL certificate supports the root domain (example.com) as well as its subdomains.

What are the advantages of an EV SSL Certificate?

EV or Extended Validation certificates are the highest class of SSL available and give the most credibility and trust to your website. EV assures consumers that their personal and financial information is protected at the highest levels of authentication. Additional verifications are performed, such as corporate agency record checks, applicant contact info, and whether the business has existed for a minimum of 3 years. EV certificates are best suited for business-critical webpages.

Does a longer subscription mean one certificate lasts for the whole term?
No. A subscription term and the validity of an individual certificate are different. Certificates must be reissued or renewed as required during your subscription, and validation may need to be repeated.
Do OV and EV use stronger encryption than DV?
The main difference is the identity validation. DV confirms domain control, OV also checks the organization, and EV uses a more extensive organization verification process. The encryption used for a connection depends on its TLS configuration.
What information should I have before ordering?

List the exact hostnames you need to protect, identify the server where the certificate will be installed and confirm who can complete domain validation. For OV or EV, also prepare the organization details and an available verification contact.

What is a certificate signing request?

A certificate signing request, or CSR, contains information about the requested certificate and its public key. Your server or certificate tool creates it with a matching private key. Keep that private key secure because installation needs the matching key.

Will buying a certificate automatically turn on HTTPS?

Issuance and installation are separate steps. Your certificate must be installed at the server or service that handles HTTPS, with the correct private key and certificate chain. Your website must also be configured to use the secure URL.

Do I need separate coverage for www and the root domain?

Check the names included in the specific product and issued certificate. Do not assume that every certificate includes both yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com. Tell us the names you use if you need help choosing.

Can a certificate protect several different domains?

That requires a product with suitable multi-domain coverage, typically using Subject Alternative Names. A wildcard for one domain does not automatically cover unrelated domain names. Review the available product’s exact scope before ordering.

What does the certificate chain do?

The chain connects your website’s certificate to a certificate authority trusted by the browser. Install the intermediate certificates supplied for your product so visitors can establish that trust correctly.

What is the difference between reissuing and renewing?

A reissue replaces the certificate within an existing order or coverage term, for example when a new certificate is needed during that term. Renewal extends the paid coverage. Both may require validation and installation of a new certificate.

Does HTTPS also remove malware from my website?

HTTPS protects information in transit. Website updates, malware protection, backups and secure account access still have their own roles. Choose those services separately according to your website’s needs.

How do I choose between the certificate products shown?

Compare validation level, covered names, product features and the billing terms shown in the live pricing cards. If you are unsure, send our team the domain names you use and the type of website or organization they represent.
