Adjusting an FTP account storage quota in cPanel

development, cpanel-whm

An FTP quota limits how much storage an additional FTP account can use where the server supports that control. It is separate from transfer bandwidth and from the total disk space allowed for the hosting account.

What you need before you begin

Check the account’s current usage and the hosting service’s overall free space. Confirm which directory the FTP user owns or writes to. A larger FTP quota cannot create free space when the hosting account itself is full.

01 Adjust an FTP account storage quota in cPanel

  1. Open FTP Accounts in cPanel and locate the specific user. Review its home directory before changing a limit.
  2. Choose Change Quota if the server exposes that action. Enter the required allocation in the units shown by the form.
  3. Select an unlimited option only when it is intended and supported. The hosting plan and filesystem limits still apply.
  4. Save the change, reconnect with the FTP client and try the intended transfer again. Check for partial files left by the earlier failed transfer.
  5. If the new limit is lower than existing usage, clean up verified disposable data or choose an appropriate limit rather than deleting unknown files.

02 Example: an FTP quota increase does not add account storage

Suppose the hosting account has only 500 MB of free space while a developer needs to upload a 700 MB archive. Raising that developer's FTP quota from 1 GB to 2 GB does not create the missing account-wide space. The overall hosting limit can still stop the transfer.

Check the exact failure and account usage first. If both limits have room but uploads fail immediately, inspect directory permissions and the connection error. If the transfer stops after several files, check partial uploads, archive extraction requirements and changing account usage.

Choose a reviewed cleanup, a smaller deployment package or an appropriate plan change according to the evidence. Keep the application backup while removing verified temporary files. After the change, make a controlled transfer and confirm that it completed instead of relying only on the new quota number displayed in cPanel.

Confirm the expected result

Confirm the displayed quota and that a controlled upload completes. Compare the account-wide disk usage too, especially if the error mentioned storage exhaustion.

Why is Change Quota unavailable or a larger quota not fixing uploads?

If Change Quota is unavailable, the FTP server or plan may not support per-user quotas. Ask support about the actual storage controls. A write-permission error or passive-connection timeout is not fixed by increasing quota, so keep the exact FTP error when troubleshooting.
