Choosing and managing applications with Softaculous

development

Softaculous is an application installer and management tool available on eligible hosting accounts. It can provision supported applications and, where implemented for that application, assist with updates, backups, cloning or importing existing installations. These features depend on the server configuration and the application recipe.

01 Choose an application deliberately

  1. Start with the work the website must do, such as publishing articles, operating a community or managing a shop. Compare current project maintenance, requirements and extension availability.
  2. Check the catalogue inside your account. An application appearing on the public Softaculous website does not guarantee it is enabled on your server or suitable for your PHP version.
  3. Review the selected version and its supported update path. Old branches can remain visible for compatibility or migration purposes without being good choices for a fresh production site.
  4. Check licensing for commercial applications, themes and plugins. An installer does not grant rights to every paid component.

02 Understand the installation scope

A new installation usually creates application files and, where required, a database and administrator account. Select the intended domain and directory carefully. Installing into a live site's occupied root can overwrite or conflict with existing content. Importing an existing installation into the management list is different from replacing it with a fresh copy.

03 Use management features with a recovery plan

Before an upgrade or clone, confirm what files and tables are included, where the backup is stored and whether you can restore it. An on-account backup can consume the same hosting quota as the live site. Keep important recovery copies in a separate permitted location and verify them periodically.

04 Example: choose the Softaculous action that matches the work

Your situation Appropriate action to review Check first
You need a new test website in an empty folder. A new installation of the chosen supported application. Domain, directory, runtime and database settings.
Your existing website works but is absent from the installation list. The supported import or detection workflow. Whether that application and installation layout can be recognised.
You need a copy for update testing. The available clone or staging action for that application. Isolation, copied database, email, scheduled tasks and writable uploads.

Review the confirmation page before any action writes files. Importing an installation into a management list is not permission to replace its files. A clone can still contain customer information and working credentials, so keep it restricted and test its separation from production.

Common questions

Will every application have staging and automatic updates?

No. Available operations differ by application and server settings. Use only the controls actually offered for the selected installation and review the application's own upgrade requirements.

Can I use NabWP instead for WordPress?

Yes. NabWP Managed WordPress is a separate product with its own WordPress management and AI workflows. Compare the service requirements before deciding whether a general hosting installation or managed WordPress plan better suits the site.
