Planning and deploying a current Contao website

development

Contao is a CMS with structured articles, layouts and extension management. This guide helps you check hosting compatibility, choose an appropriate installation method and verify the first usable site. The application, its extensions and any commercial license remain separate from the hosting account.

01 Check Contao and hosting requirements

Confirm the supported Contao release, PHP requirements and access to the deployment method it requires. Composer-based dependency management can need shell access and more memory than an ordinary page request.

Use the project's current supported release information and the requirements shown for the package you select. If Softaculous offers an older or unsuitable build, follow the current vendor installation process or ask us to confirm a suitable environment. Do not enable an unsupported PHP runtime simply to reproduce an old tutorial.

02 Prepare and install with Contao Manager

  1. Choose an empty project directory, a supported release and a compatible PHP environment. Back up any existing destination first.
  2. Configure the domain document root to the project's public directory. Create a database and a user limited to that database.
  3. Download Contao Manager from the official project and place its supplied PHP file in that public directory. Open it over the verified HTTPS hostname.
  4. Create the Manager login and let its environment checks confirm the PHP binary and deployment requirements. This login is separate from the CMS administrator account.
  5. Choose the supported Contao version, review the package operation and wait for completion. Configure the database through the supported workflow and review database changes before applying them.
  6. Create the CMS administrator, sign in and build the first page structure. Keep the Manager access details securely for future maintenance.

For example, the public domain can point to /home/ACCOUNT/sites/example/public while the project remains in /home/ACCOUNT/sites/example. Replace this illustrative path with your account's actual directory.

03 Configure Contao for first use

Follow the current Contao Manager or vendor installation workflow when the installer package is not current. Configure the correct public document root and database, then create the first site structure and page layout.

Confirm the expected result

Check a published page, uploaded asset, editor login and scheduled maintenance. Ensure configuration and dependency files are not downloadable from the public site.

04 Maintain and troubleshoot Contao

If dependency installation fails, review the reported PHP or extension requirement and available build resources. Do not bypass platform requirements to force an incompatible installation onto a shared account.

Keep files and data together in your recovery plan, test application updates in a copy when practical, and review logs after deployment. If installation fails, record the exact error, selected application/PHP versions and destination path before retrying.

A common question

Does a successful installation mean the whole application is ready for customers?

No. Verify the public content, permissions, forms or notifications and the features you actually use. An installer success message confirms provisioning, not your complete business workflow.
