Configure guest checkout and account creation according to how customers need to buy and access their purchases. A simple physical-goods store may support guest orders, while downloads, memberships or subscriptions can require a different account workflow.

01 Review product and extension requirements
Identify features that depend on a customer account, including protected downloads, recurring services and saved account access. Check the relevant extension documentation before enabling guest purchases broadly. Decide how customers will set their passwords and how support will verify ownership of an order.
02 Set the account options
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Accounts & Privacy.
- Choose whether customers may place orders without an account.
- Review login during checkout and the available account-creation locations, including checkout and My Account.
- Configure the password-setup and account-creation options shown by your installed version.
- Review the privacy notices and retention settings separately with the responsible business owner.
- Save and test new-customer, existing-customer and guest journeys as applicable.
Will a guest order automatically appear in an account created later?
Do not assume every past order or extension entitlement is linked automatically in every configuration. Check the installed WooCommerce and extension behaviour and use a verified support workflow when connecting a historical order. Matching an email address alone should not justify exposing another person's order details.
Why is registration still unavailable?
Check whether the assigned My Account page displays its required WooCommerce content and whether registration is enabled in the intended location. A custom checkout or account plugin may provide its own form and controls, so test the actual public page.
03 Verify email and recovery
Confirm account setup and password-reset messages reach the customer's mailbox. Use unique test addresses and review the resulting account role. Do not send passwords in ordinary email or ask customers to disclose them for troubleshooting. Account-creation errors should be investigated alongside mail delivery, security filters and plugin conflicts.
04 Check the business result
After a sandbox order, verify order access, downloads and saved addresses under the expected account. Test a logged-out visitor trying to access the same private data. Keep the checkout simple while preserving the access controls required by the products you actually sell.
